Why Getting Technical Drawings Right Really Matters

The importance of accurate technical drawings has never been greater. Local authorities are changing the way they validate applications, with stricter compliance requirements and far less tolerance for ambiguity or missing information. What is submitted at feasibility and planning stage is now scrutinised more closely than ever, and the consequences of inaccuracies can be costly in both time and momentum.

At feasibility stage, good drawings are about truth. Understanding whether something genuinely fits, whether head heights work, whether circulation makes sense, and whether an idea is worth pursuing at all. Measuring properly and drawing accurately allows informed decisions to be made early, before emotional or financial investment runs too far ahead of reality.

At planning stage, accuracy becomes critical. Drawings that are unclear or inconsistent can lead to applications being delayed, returned or subjected to unnecessary scrutiny. Small discrepancies in wall thicknesses, levels or junctions can invite questions that distract from the architectural intent. Clear, coordinated drawings allow planners to assess proposals with confidence and help protect the design from being picked apart on technical grounds.

Building Regulations demand another level of precision. Current regulations are complex and constantly evolving, and it is essential that your architect is fully up to date. As a RIBA chartered practice, we are required to undertake continued professional development every year, logged with both RIBA and the ARB. Our current learning stands at forty five hours annually, which in practice equates to around forty five minutes each week. This includes formal courses, away days, technical updates, reading and research. It ensures that our designs are not only compliant, but informed, contemporary and robust.

Technical clarity is equally important at tender stage. When drawings and specifications are comprehensive, the contract can be formed accurately and transparently. Everything is written down, priced properly and understood by all parties. This is where certainty is created.

Bathrooms are a good example. In our practice, bathroom design is included as standard. We fully design and draw them before work begins on site, providing an interior design edge that many architects do not allow for. Selecting layouts, fittings and finishes early gives far greater certainty on cost, coordination and delivery. It reduces assumptions, limits variations and allows the project to move forward with confidence.

Good technical drawings are not just about compliance. They are about clarity, control and care. They protect the design, support the build, and ultimately create better outcomes for everyone involved.

Below are examples of our bathroom drawings, showing the level of detail we provide as part of our standard service.
